Danish POS law, SAF-T & bookkeeping rules — explained in plain English.
Here's what the regulations require of a POS system in Denmark, what Kassalo does today, and what's coming next. Honest, no small print.
Digital sales registration (the Danish 'kasselov')
Since 1 January 2024, certain businesses in Denmark are required to use a certified digital sales registration system. The requirement applies to restaurants, cafés and bars, pizzerias and grill bars, as well as convenience stores and round-the-clock kiosks with a turnover between DKK 50,000 and DKK 10 million. The Danish Tax Authority (Skattestyrelsen) may also extend the requirement to other businesses.
The system must, among other things, maintain a tamper-proof electronic journal, record every sale with a timestamp, payment method and a unique transaction number, and be able to export data in the SAF-T Cash Register format. Violations can result in fines of DKK 10,000, DKK 20,000 and DKK 30,000 for repeated inspections.
The Danish Bookkeeping Act
Your POS system is not your bookkeeping system — that's your ERP. However, the Danish Bookkeeping Act requires that transaction trails and supporting documents can be documented and stored digitally. Sole traders and personally owned businesses with a turnover exceeding DKK 300,000 in two consecutive years are subject to the requirement for a digital bookkeeping system from 1 January 2026.
Kassalo posts every sale to your ERP with the receipt number as a reference and stores the receipt digitally, ensuring a complete and unbroken trail from receipt to bookkeeping entry.

Why no one can alter a sale after the fact
Every transaction receives a SHA-256 fingerprint that incorporates the fingerprint of the previous transaction. If anyone changes so much as a single digit on an old receipt, the chain breaks — and it's immediately detectable. The chain is signed with a secret key known only to the server.
- Append-only: sales are corrected via counter-entries only
- Numbering can never skip or be reused
- The entire chain can be verified with a single call
